Biography of the Late Priest Mekonen tedla

The late Melake Tsehay Kesis Mekonen Tedla, was a truly devoted servant of God who faithfully ministered at Misrake Tsehaye Saint Mariam Church from 2019 to 2024. From the beginning of his calling, he demonstrated unwavering commitment, humility, and deep spiritual discipline in serving both God and His people.

He dedicated his life to the growth and strengthening of the Church, not only through his teachings and prayers but also through his actions. With determination and perseverance, he worked tirelessly to support, develop, unite, and uplift the church community. He played an immense role in the spiritual and personal growth of every one of his spiritual children here in Spokane. His efforts played a significant role in establishing and maintaining the church, ensuring it became a place of worship, peace, and spiritual refuge for many.

After dedicating a decade of his life here in the US, especially in Spokane, to the service of God, he had a choice to go back home and reunite with his biological children and his beloved wife, but he chose to serve God’s will by staying here and shepherd his spiritual children through difficult time thereby demonstrating his faithfulness to his true calling. His biggest legacy is the fact that he taught 4 children and got them ordained as full deacons in 2023. Because of his dedication, we are able to serve God in the fullness of our Orthodox Tewahedo traditions and teachings. He didn’t just preach the word of God but lived it and demonstrated it through his work.

As it is written in 1 Corinthians 15:58:
“Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord…”
This verse reflects his life—a life firmly rooted in service and unwavering faith.

Known for his strong faith, kindness, and leadership, he guided countless believers, encouraging them to walk in righteousness and devotion. He truly lived out the words of Hebrews 6:10:
“For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name…”

His service extended beyond the altar—he was a pillar in the community, always ready to help, counsel, and support those in need. He embodied the heart of a true shepherd, as described in 1 Peter 5:2:
“Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof…”

His legacy is one of sacrifice, dedication, and love for God’s house. Though he has departed from this world, the impact of his work and the lives he touched will be remembered for generations to come.

As we remember him, we hold onto the promise in 2 Timothy 4:7:
“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”

May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may his memory continue to inspire all who knew him.

Memory eternal, our beloved Father, Melake Tsehay Kesis Mekonnen!!!

OUR CHURCH

“The Seed of Faith in a Foreign Land”

Misrake Tsehaye Saint Mary Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church was born out of the deep longing of Ethiopian faithful who found themselves far from home, yet never far from God. Like the children of Israel in a foreign land, this congregation began humbly, though its story reaches even deeper into God’s providence.

The congregation began in 2009 with a small group of faithful Ethiopians and Eritreans. We gathered at St. Gregorios Malankara Orthodox Church every Saturday for prayer and hymn singing. On Sundays, we attended Holy Mass, where Fr. Michael and Fr. Anthony celebrated the Divine Liturgy. Through their guidance and the shared commitment of the faithful, the community began to grow, not only in number, but in faith, unity, and spiritual depth.

As the congregation grew, so did the desire to worship fully in the richness of our own tradition. In time, we found a temporary home, renting a small space in the basement of Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church. There, in a borrowed place, we celebrated the Divine Liturgy, received Holy Communion, and worshiped God according to the sacred teachings and traditions of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church.

We had no building to call our own, no walls adorned with holy icons, no altar bearing the faces of the saints we cherished. Yet, week after week, we gathered faithfully, lifting our voices in Ge’ez and Amharic, ringing our brass sistrums, and beating our drums. We trusted that the same God who led our ancestors through the wilderness would one day lead us to a place of our own. That seed of faith, quietly planted beneath another congregation’s roof, was the beginning of something God had already prepared.

The People Who Made It Possible

When the time came to purchase the church building from Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church, it was not the work of one person, but of the entire body, every hand and every heart.

Members of the congregation gave sacrificially, offering what they had with faith that God would multiply it. Families who had come to Spokane with little gave generously. Many stretched beyond their comfort, understanding that what was at stake was not merely a building, but a spiritual home for future generations, to worship God in the fullness of their Ethiopian Orthodox faith.

It was an offering reminiscent of the widow’s mite in the Gospel, seemingly small by worldly standards, yet precious in the sight of God. And God honored every gift, both great and small, until the day the keys were placed in our hands and the church became our own.

What God Has Done

Only God could have written this story

A Lutheran congregation that had faithfully served its community for decades found itself aging and diminishing. Rather than allow their beloved church to fall silent, they entrusted it to a growing congregation. As one member of Messiah Lutheran Church humbly expressed, “We are decreasing, but they are increasing.”

What seemed like an ending became, in God’s hands, a beautiful beginning.

Today, pews that once sat nearly empty are filled with hundreds of worshipers—singing, rejoicing, and processing in celebration of the faith. The walls that once reflected a different tradition now shine with holy icons and the vibrant heritage of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.

Misrake Tsehaye Saint Mary is not merely a church that was purchased, it is a church that was given, prepared, and filled by God.

Misrak Tsehaye Saint Mary

Misrak Tsehaye Saint Mary

The name Misrake Tsehaye  Saint Mary reflects both our spiritual devotion and our connection to the traditions of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church.

1. “Misrakemeans “East”

Misrake means East, the direction from which the light rises. In the Bible, the East often represents hope, new beginnings, and the coming of God’s light.

In Christian tradition, believers often face the East when praying, symbolizing waiting for Christ, who is the true light of the world.

The Bible says:

“For as the lightning comes out of the east, and shines even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.”
— Matthew 24:27

This reminds us that Christ will return with glory, like light rising from the East.

Another verse says:

“From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same the Lord’s name is to be praised.”
— Psalm 113:3

Therefore, Misrake represents the rising of God’s light and the hope of Christ’s coming.

2. Tsehaye – “Sun”

Tsehaye means Sun. The sun gives light, warmth, and life, and in the Bible, Christ is compared to the sun because He brings spiritual light and salvation to the world.

The Bible says:

“But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings.”
— Malachi 4:2

This verse refers to Jesus Christ as the Sun of righteousness, bringing healing and salvation.

Jesus also said:

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
— John 8:12

Therefore, Tsehaye represents Christ, the spiritual Sun who gives life and light to humanity.

3. Saint Mary

Saint Mary is the holy woman chosen by God to give birth to Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world. Through her obedience, God’s plan for the salvation of humanity was fulfilled.

The angel said to her:

“And behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus.”
— Luke 1:31

Mary humbly accepted God’s will and said:

“Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word.”
— Luke 1:38

Because of her faith and obedience, all generations honor her:

“For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.”
— Luke 1:48

Saint Mary is respected because God chose her to bring the Savior into the world.

4. Orthodox – “Straight / True Faith”

The word Orthodox means straight, correct, or true belief. It refers to following the true teachings of Christ and the apostles without changing them.

The Bible encourages believers to remain in the true path:

“Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein.”
— Jeremiah 6:16

Another verse says:

“Hold fast the form of sound words.”
— 2 Timothy 1:13

Therefore, Orthodox Christianity means keeping the true and straight faith that was handed down from the apostles.

The name Misrake Tsehaye Saint Mary Ethiopian Orthodox Church carries a powerful spiritual meaning:
   •    Misrake (East) – The rising of God’s light and hope.
   •    Tsehaye (Sun) – Christ, the Sun of righteousness who gives life and salvation.
   •    Saint Mary – The blessed woman chosen by God to bring the Savior into the world.
   •    Orthodox – The true and straight faith passed down from the apostles.

Together, the name represents the rising light of Christ, the salvation that came through Saint Mary, and the commitment to the true apostolic faith.
